Munupi Lodge - Melville Island - NT

Apsley Strait is the body of water separating Melville and Bathurst Islands in the Northern Territory.  On its shores is a new operation managed by Michael Benton called Munupi Wilderness Lodge.  Although the lodge is only minutes from a local community, it still gives the impression of being truly remote.

Less than an hour flight from Darwin has you landing at the airstrip (Garden Point) where you will be met by one of the fishing guides.  There are a number of flights on most days.  A five minute drive has you at the lodge.

The area has dozens of tidal creeks, estuaries, flats and outer reefs.  Barramundi, plenty of solid mangrove jacks and fingermark bream are the main stay of species casting to snags.  The guides at Munupi report that the area has some pretty impressive threadfin salmon and black jew when the tides and conditions are right for them.  The outer reefs are home to giant trevally and queenfish, should pelagics be more your scene.

If you like eating mud crabs, then Munupi is alive with them.  They even have a full time "crabber" at the resort just to keep clients smiling while indulging in bowls of chilli mud crab. YUM!!

Services & Facilities

Lodge:- The lodge boasts fully air-conditioned rooms, a spa, golf course, and spectacular views over Apsley Strait and the Timor Sea.  Catering for up to twelve guests at a time, it is a very comfortable lodge indeed.

Although fishing is the main reason for visiting Munupi, the local Tiwi people invite you to come and enjoy their hospitality.  During your stay you can play golf on the most Northern golf course in Australia.  You can swim in natural springs, visit the ruins at Fort Dundas, picnic on remote beaches or just go fishing!  At the end of each day sit in the open-air restaurant and watch the sunset, laze on the verandah reading a book, or dream of the day’s fishing experiences while floating in the spa!...  The choice is yours.

Art plays a big part in the life of Tiwi people. Even the local school is painted with stories of everyday life.  A visit to Munupi Arts will give you a chance to meet the artists and maybe find that art piece that you have been looking for.

Guide: The guides at the lodge have extensive fishing experience in the Top End and utilise custom made vessels with 90hp & 70hp outboards.

Catch and release is practised at the lodge.  You will have enough to eat for dinner from your catch, but please, no eskies!
