Wedge Island Fly-In Big Fish Package

Herbie Glacken is one of South Australia’s most respected charter operators, having fished the waters of lower Yorke Peninsula and Spencer Gulf for many years. To capitalise on Herbie’s experience and knowledge of his home waters, Ultimate Fishing Australia has set up a neat fly-in package to Wedge Island. Wedge is among SA’s most beautiful and unspoilt islands and makes the ideal base for a weekend get away or extended fishing trip.

Staying in a spacious and superbly appointed beach house overlooking Wedge’s north coast, clients will fish on board Herbie’s Apache, a 36 foot flybridge cruiser that can cater for groups of up to 12 anglers. However, we prefer to keep to group size to a maximum of seven for comfort.

The deep water reef systems around Wedge Island provide an enormous variety of fish species, including snapper, nannygai, blue morwong, school sharks, trevally, samson fish, yellowtail kings and big whiting. The north beach at Wedge also has some thumper salmon to four kilograms and better, which provide great sport on light tackle.

To cater for anglers with different budgets and time constraints, Ultimate Fishing is offering two, three and four day Wedge Island fly-in packages. You take off from Adelaide Airport in a twin engine Piper Chieftain and land on Wedge around half an hour later. Herbie will meet the plane and you will be transferred to the beach house.

The fishing day begins early next morning and continues until late afternoon, when you will be ferried to the island and can shower and relax with a cold beer before a sumptuous seafood dinner. As Herbie has a licence to set a couple of lobster pots in season, chances are fresh crayfish will be on the menu!

Fishing commences early the following day and, depending where you go, the catch should be starting to mount. As the plane can carry up to a hundred kilos of fish and ice, you’ll be able to bring back a decent feed – on top of what’s served up in the Wedge Island beach house during your stay.

At the conclusion of fishing on your final day, you will have the chance to shower and change before boarding the plane for the return flight – probably tired from pulling in a heap of fish, but exhilarated by the whole Wedge Island experience.
